A goal setting and mental skills training game
SKYWORD™ is a goal setting and mental skills training game that helps individuals and teams get to where they want to go. When participants, or "players," go through the training curriculum, they learn how their thought processes work, how it influences their performance, and how they can use that awareness, along with some tools, to break through their limitations and achieve the goal they set for themselves. It's all about knowing how to develop new comfort zones, habits, and beliefs that'll support the goal or change the player (and you) want to see.
Using space flight as the theme, the SKYWORD game takes players and/or teams on a learning journey from the world they are in today, to the world they would like to see using the power of their brain, or more specifically their belief system, to get them there. The object of the game, or their mission, is to set a goal and then learn how to train their brain to build the mental strength to achieve it. However, their journey is not easy. Right out of the gate, they have to overcome a huge challenge that is keeping them stuck in the world they are in today. And at the same time, they have to battle their competition which isn’t just the players sitting next to them. But as the player progress through the game, they develop a secret weapon that will help them blast through their challenges, beat their competition, and achieve great things. That’s how they learn to how to compete and win The Mental Game of Goal Achievement™. And when they do, they win the greatest game of all because the sky and beyond is the limit in terms of what they can dream and what they can achieve. And it's why their greatest victories or "wins" will come after the game.
Why SKYWORD™ is the "Mental Game of Goal Achievement™"
SKYWORD™ is The Mental Game of Goal Achievement™ because it addresses how to win the mental game that takes place inside our head when it comes to achieving goals, making change, or improving ones performance. It’s a competition between one thought that says, “Sure I want to achieve and excel!” And another thought that says, “But wait a minute. That takes effort. I’d rather just stay where I’m at.” That negative thinking, or self-talk, we hear is our true competition and it’s an indicator that we have a deep seated limiting self-perception or self-belief that is holding us back. SKYWORD takes the mental game we play inside our head and puts it into a training game so players can learn how to win their own “mental game” when it comes to achieving their goals. And have fun at the same time! In the end, they develop the mindset of a “winner."
How SKYWORD™ curriculum is delivered
Unlike attending an on-line or in-person seminar, delivery of the SKYWORD™ curriculum is through a DVD and board game so players can:
- Hear and digest the learning
- Reinforce the learning to each other in a fun and competitive way through game play
- Apply the learning and tools through personal and/or team exercises
- Encourage each other to apply their learning and tools on an on-going basis
The curriculum comes in a Game Set that has four identical sets of game boards, playing cards, games pieces, and DVD that supports up to 24 players or 6 players per game board. It's designed to support a typical classroom, athletic team, or work group, but can easily support much larger groups with the addition of more Game Sets.
The training self-directs players through a five stage process for setting and achieving both personal and team goals based on the context you give them (i.e. goals related to academics, athletics, work, personal life, etc.). During the process, players are exposed to proven principles and concepts condensed from the fields of peak performance training, sports psychology, and the cognitive sciences. Upon completion, each player is equipped with a written goal, a daily action plan, and a support structure to help encourage them to work on their goal.
Player & Leader Expectations
PLAYER EXPECTATIONS. See FAQ for details of what is expected of players before and after the game.
LEADER EXPECTATIONS. Because the training is self-directed or facilitated by the DVD, you as the leader, can engage in the training as little or as much as you like. To ensure a memorable and successful experience, a comprehensive Leader’s Guide is provided with a one page Leader’s Checklist that covers everything you need to make that happen. See FAQ for more details.
Time Requirement
To complete the five stage curriculum takes approximately 4 to 5 hours and can easily be accomplished all in one setting or separated and spread over multiple days depending upon your needs. A detailed breakdown of the time allotted for each component in the training game is provided in the Leader's Guide that comes with each Game Set.
How SKYWORD™ works or get results
The training works, or gets "outward" results by first focusing "inward" at the root cause level of what drives most people’s behavior and performance, mainly their dominant attitudes, habits, beliefs, and comfort zones. By focusing on changing the causal factors of performance, rather than the symptoms, players and teams identify unproductive thinking habits and behavior that are holding them back. Then they learn how to change them to more productive ones that will help them achieve the goal they set for themselves and/or for their team.
The primary method used to effect the change is the secret weapon they get from playing the game. The more they use their secret weapon, the more they are able overcome self-doubt, negativity, and adversity, while at the same time develop the right mindset and habits for successful goal achievement. And because no one truly achieves success on their own, a support structure is put into place where each player teams up with another player and together they champion or encourage each other to work on specific learnings and tools they receive during the training.
When implemented in your particular setting, the game is used to address whatever need you have at any given time. It could be improving student and athlete performance, increasing employee productivity, helping people rise out of poverty, or simply providing an opportunity for personal growth.
Key concepts integrated into the training
The key concepts integrated into the SKYWORD™ training game and curriculum are the same factors integrated into the Performance Enhancement training program developed at The United States Military Academy at West Point* such as:
- Self-image and self-beliefs
- Positive and effective thinking and self-talk
- Goal setting
- Focus and concentration
- Imagery and visualization
- Mental conditioning
- Stress and anxiety management
